Sigourney Weaver as the Queen of Sci-Fi
Sigourney Weaver, with a chuckle, says she will never grow tired of space travel. “I’m always up for going to another planet,” the three-time Oscar nominee said. “Outer space has been good to me.”
This is the 30th anniversary of Weaver’s career breakthrough with her role as Ellen Ripley in the first “Alien” film. But far from resting on her laurels, the 60-year-old actress is again on extraterrestrial active duty with “Avatar,” the James Cameron sci-fi epic that opens Dec. 18.
With four “Alien” films, two hit “Ghostbusters” movies and her work in the ingenious spoof film “Galaxy Quest,” Weaver came into “Avatar” as royalty among the Comic-Con crowd that now hold so much sway over Hollywood. It was no coincidence that the makers of the film “Wall-E” got Weaver to voice the computer aboard the Axiom starship – she’s been the voice in the ear of fanboys for three decades.
Sigourney Weaver is totally the queen of Sci-fi. I remember when I first saw her in "Alien." She started off as a scared crewmember, who finally blew the damn alien out into space. Then, you saw her battling a bunch of aliens in "Aliens," and saying one of the best lines ever.
"Get away from her YOU bitch!"
After that, you saw her winning over more and more aliens. It wasn't the last time she was going to grace the screen. She was in "Ghostbusters" and "Ghostbusters II." Even with Richard Murray opposite her, Weaver still held her own.
Years later, she would star in "Galaxy Quest," which was a suprising hit for me. I didn't think I would like it, but then it quickly became one of my favorite Sci-fi comedies ever.
Now, she is in James Cameron "Avatar." I am not sure about this movie because it can go either way, but all I know is that even if it does, Sigourney Weaver will still be the queen of Sci-fi in my eyes.
